Education

  • Doctor of Philosophy, Candidate (2008-2010)
    Simon Fraser University
Following my studies in the Teacher Education Program at the University of British Columbia, the next logical step was to continue graduate work. My interests, from a research standpoint, lie in the creation of characters, the link between image and text, and the function of the reader in the creation of the literary self. I expect to graduate from the program in 2010.
  • Bachelor of Education (2008-2009)
    University of British Columbia
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Teacher Education Program at the University of British Columbia is a rigorous and varied collection of courses and projects in the diverse disciplines within the field of education. I specialized in the teaching of Secondary English, following from my graduate studies in that area.
  • Joint Masters of Interdisciplinary Humanities (2006-2007)
    Memorial University
The Joint Interdisciplinary Masters in Philosophy (Humanities) at Memorial University is designed to provide students with a rigorous yet flexible program of study at the graduate level, whereby a joint masters may be completed in two related disciplines. In my case, this earned me a graduate degree in English Creative Writing (Literature) and Philosophy (Applied) Students are required to complete a minimum of ten graduate-level seminar courses (divided between the two disciplines), each being examined both in writing and orally, by a panel of examiners. In addition, a journal project, equivalent in length and complexity to a graduate thesis, is submitted at the end of the program. I focused primarily on creative writing and photography/design theories. A component of my English Creative Writing thesis was subsequently published as Unfocused Snapshots, following the publication of another work composed for this program, Unconfessed.
  • Bachelor of Arts, English Language & Literature (2005-2006)
    Memorial University
Having completed a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature with a minor in English Language & Literature, I felt that my future lay in teaching English, rather than second-language French studies. As a result, I undertook to supplement my degree with a second major in English Language & Literature, which I completed in 2006, prior to entry into the graduate program. My studies in this program focused primarily on twentieth-century literature and creative writing, which became a more focused study of the techniques of modernism and creative fiction, at the graduate level.
  • Bachelor of Arts, French Literature (2000-2005)
    Memorial University
Having studied in an immersion environment and having lived in French-speaking locations at various times in my life, it was natural for me to gravitate toward a French Literature program at the undergraduate level. In these surroundings, my love of literature developed more fully, as I concentrated on experimental French literature of the twentieth century, primarily literature of France and Quebec. I also studied extensively the works of Camus and presented a number of seminars on existentialism and literary activism.
  • Bachelor of Music, Vocal Performance (1997-2000)
    Memorial University
I have sung all my life. It seemed only the next logical step to move from amateur performance to professional training at the university level. I focused on baroque and early-classical repertoire and studied extensively in theory and composition, particularly arrangement techniques for vocal ensembles and small chamber ensembles with voice.
