Réchauffement

My warm-up activity is quite simple but I have found it relatively effective in high school classrooms. This is to be used in the World History course for creating groups at the beginning of class. I take groups of three related items, for example, three world leaders who were present at a particular conference or three goods discussed in a particular treaty, and print them together on sheets of paper. I then rip the paper along the boundaries between the items. The students then must search around the class to find the match. They will know that they have found the correct answers when they try the boundaries but they will discuss the possibilities for combination before they can attempt to put them together. Once they have found their matching partners, the items will link to the group activity. If they are all names of participants in a conference, for example, these will be the important individuals for research and discussion. For items on trade talks, each member of the group will take their selected item and discover why that item was so important and the result of the talks.
